We recognise that our students often have difficulties in expressing themselves and communicating distress or need. Communication can take the form of behaviours that are perceived as challenging.
We work as a multi-disciplinary team to meet students' needs by developing a person-centred Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) plan.
This plan is based upon an assessment of the potential reasons for the behaviour. As well as making sure that we understand what upsets the student, it is also important to understand what the student enjoys and the skills that they already possess to cope with situations they find difficult. The plan can then use this information to support staff to ensure positive focus on improving the student's skill and communication, thus reducing the need to engage in behaviours that challenge and improving their quality of life while they are with us.
